MTB on Madeira Island
The beautiful island of Madeira is one of the paradises the adventure sports lovers in general, and the sports of Mountain Bike (MTB) or All terrain Bicycles (ATB), are one of the most sought after lately by European athletes, they have discovered on the island, challenging and highly competitive roads, in their main modalities such as Enduro, Downhill and Cross Country circuits; in the middle of a unique forest, of spectacular landscapes. With the invitation and guidance of my friend Pedro Correia from the company ExtraMile Madeira, take the opportunity to explore a bit of the MTB on Madeira Island, specifically in the area of Poiso.
From the sky to the sea
As expected, in this sub tropical paradise, with high peaks and steep slopes, the roads become extremely challenging. Stony ground, roots, trees and jumps that demand good technique, concentration and confidence. As a result there is a disadvantage, not having many easy roads for beginners, but on the other hand many red and black category roads, which are a strong attraction for the most experienced athletes, who literally ride in cars over the clouds until the highest on the island, to launch into exciting 20 to 40 km tours of pure adrenaline.
2017 Enduro World Championship
The MTB on the Island of Madeira grew so much in recent times, that this year it received the Enduro World Championship, there were 9 stages with about 90 km of route. With the participation of more than 300 athletes and the top 50 of the world ranking in the modality. Many of them use these scenarios as training, especially in the European winter months when the tracks of the north of the continent are covered with snow.
How to practice MTB on the Island of Madeira?
In the area there are some operators that offer packages and Full Day tour, for less than € 100 that include: transportation, equipment, high performance bicycles, special for the practice of these modalities, guide and insurance. When the athletes have the necessary equipment and bicycle, they only need to transfer the low cost, as well as the number of participants. If you know a bit about the MTB roads on the Island of Madeira, you can take the bike by Autocarro to the beginnings of the roads, in the higher areas and enjoy the descent. If you have your own transport you can do the same, taking into consideration that everything you descend, you’ll have to upload it by pedaling on the road. This significantly limits the amount of roads you can travel
Bring good hydration, protection not only for the joints but also shorts that protect your legs from the bushes that in some steps narrow the path. Sun protection and a partner or guide. The main areas of the island are Poiso, Calheta and Paul da Serra, the latter being where there are some paths for beginners. All these roads are unpredictable, changing with erosion and constant use by athletes. Do not open new roads, or alternatives in difficult steps, it is better to pass these obstacles on foot. Use the paths for bicycles and avoid levadas exclusive for pedestrians. And finally, when you meet a fall of a branch or tree at high speed, or a rock or jump, where it is not possible to stop or failing is better not to do so, remember that it is very easy to take a souvenir home.
